The City of Columbia is getting in the final phases of updating its ward boundaries. The Ward Apportionment Committee, appointed by the Columbia City board, took part in a three-month procedure to establish recommendations that it presented to the city board Monday night due to the 2020 U.S. Census results released last fall.

Because of the growth of the city, reapportioning the wards is needed to make them as equivalent in population as possible." None of the existing wards have had a static experience in the last years," stated committee chair Tracy Greever-Rice.  A Good Read  established three trial maps along with "a set of alternatives to any of the trials to remediate a few of the concerns of specific areas," Greever-Rice said.

State redistricting standards state that any modifications made must preserve neighborhoods of interest to the greatest level possible. Census information revealed a distinction of 3,009 individuals in between the 5th Ward (the largest ward in the city) and the Fourth Ward (the smallest). The distinction corresponds to a 14. 3% variation, whereas the optimum deviation allowed is 10%.

The 3 prospective maps brought prior to the council are intended for later conversation and ballot when presented as their own program items. Trial B had the most votes from the redistricting committee, making it the suggested option for how to progress in redistricting the city. If the Trial B map is selected, 1,225 individuals would move from Ward 1 to Ward 2; 1,135 would move from Ward 5 to Ward 4; and 698 would move from Ward 6 to Ward 4.

Citizens who spoke at interested parties conferences held by the committee stated their issues with potential maps stemmed mostly from neighborhoods and their respective housing associations being split up, making it possible for 2 council members to be expected to represent the needs and requests of one community. The committee convened and gathered online responses to offer people the opportunity to provide input and find out about prospective changes the committee was wanting to make.
